Some American parents might think their children need better educations to compete with China and other countries. But how much do the parents themselves need to change? A new book called Battle Hymn(圣歌) of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua has caused a debate about cultural differences in parenting. Ms. Chua is a professor at the Yale Law School in New Haven, Connecticut, and the mother of two daughters. She was raised in the American Mid-west by immigrant Chinese parents. In the Chinese culture, the tiger represents strength and power. In her book, Ms Chua writes about how she demanded excellence from her daughters. For example, she threatened to burn her daughter’s stuffed animals unless she played a piece of music perfectly. She would insult her daughters if they failed to meet her expectations. Ms. Chua told NBC television that she had a clear list of what her daughters, Sophia and Louisa, were not permitted to do. “Attend a sleepover, have a playdate, watch TV or play computer games, be in a school play, get any grade less than an ‘A’.” Many people have criticized Amy Chua. Some say her parenting methods were abusive. She even admits that her husband, who is not Chinese, sometimes objected to her parenting style. But she says that was the way her parents raised her and her three sisters. Ms. Chua makes fun of her own extreme style of parenting. She says she eased some of the pressure after her younger daughter rebelled and shouted, “I hate my life! I hate you!” Ms. Chua says she decided to retreat when it seemed like there was a risk that she might lose her daughter. But she also says American parents often have low expectations of their children’s abilities. “One of the biggest differences I see between Western and Chinese parenting is that Chinese parents assume strength rather than fragility.” Stacey DeBroff has written four books on parenting. “I think that the stirring of intense debate has to do with what it means to be a successful parent and what it means to be a successful child.” Ms. DeBroff says Amy Chua’s parenting style is not limited to Chinese families. She says it represents a traditional way of parenting among immigrants seeking a better future for their children. But she also sees a risk. When children have no time to be social or to follow their own interests, they might not develop other skills that they need to succeed in life. Stacey DeBroff advises parents to develop their own style of parenting and not just repeat the way they were raised.【小题1】According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE about American parents?A.Some of them expect their children to be competitive.B.Some of them need to educate themselves better.C.They should learn from Chinese parents.D.They care their kids more than Chinese.【小题2】What can we learn about Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother?A.It is a list of things for children to do.B.It is a book about cultural differences.C.It is a heated debate about parenting.D.It is a book about how to raise children.【小题3】Based on the passage, Ms. Chua’s parenting is exposed to the following EXCEPT A.pressureB.managementC.recreationD.compromise【小题4】 Which of the following agrees with Ms. DeBroff?A.Different cultures have different concepts of values.B.Chua’s parenting is followed by many American families.C.Immigrants are always bitterly struggling abroad.D.Parents had better raise their children in person.【小题5】 What’s the author’s attitude towards Ms. Chua’s parenting?A.PositiveB.InactiveC.IndefiniteD.Negative
For parents about to have their first baby, there will be many things in short supply—sleep, for example. One thing, however, that new parents will not be short of is advice. Family, friends and even total strangers are always keen to pass on their worldly expertise. And you can't escape the self-appointed "experts" on TV, in books, and on the internet. Parents-to-be, be warned! We all have those competent friends. You know the type. Their life is organized to an abnormal degree. The right school has been arranged since conception. Their babies have never cried or thrown up in the car. When you discuss weaning, potty training or getting babies to sleep, they make it clear that they know everything and you know nothing. Then there are those whose own life is falling apart but who still offer to share their wisdom with you. They haven't spoken to their own children for a decade, but they consider themselves relationship gurus. You haven't asked them to advise you, but they drone on endlessly. The in-laws are another minefield. Before the birth, they promised not to interfere, but at every opportunity they tell you that they know what your child is thinking: "I'm sure he's hungry." "I think he wants to sleep." There is the unspoken implication you are not up to the job. And then there are the parenting books. Behind those covers with cute babies and toddlers making fairy cakes are hefty manuals worthy of army boot camps. Inside are lists of rules for everything—even advising you to open the curtains promptly at 8:23 a.m. But don't despair. There are some useful bits of advice out there: they propose being realistic from the start, they warn you to forget having a social life; and suggest giving up such cherished ideals as never allowing your child to eat chocolate or watch TV before they are one year old. There are also excellent practical tips for new mums and dads: if visitors offer to make tea, accept; sleep when baby sleeps and forget the housework. Perhaps the best advice is to ignore all advice and do it your own way. Who will give advice to new parents? A)Family members. B)Friends. C)Strangers. D)All of them. Which is NOT a description of these competent friends? A)They have chosen the right school before their baby is born. B)They know how to make babies sleep. C)They think others know less than them in terms of parenting. D)They never leave their babies alone. The in-laws are another minefield because _______. A)they always interfere in your parenting B)they don't know when the baby wants to sleep C)they know the baby is hungry but never speak out D)they will give you wrong directions What is the writer's tone when talking about parenting books? A)Critical. B)Shocked. C)Disdainful.

question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty

The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.
The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. The man with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. C. The man who is wealthy and impersonal. D. The man who can negotiate with his foreign counterparts.
