For some people today, reading is no longer relaxation. In order to keep up with their work, they must read letters, reports, proposals, work emails, trade publications, and interoffice communications, not to mention newspapers, magazines, and journals: a never-ending flood of words. In getting a job or advancing in one, the ability to read and comprehend quickly can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet, the unfortunate fact is that many of us are poor readers because many of us develop poor reading habits at an early age, and never get over them. We don't know how to read effectively, or even appropriately. The main problem lies in language itself -- words. Single words have little meaning until they are combined into phrases, sentences, and paragraphs. Unfortunately, untrained readers do not read groups of words. They read one word at a time, and often regress to reread words or passages. Regression, or looking back over what you have just read, is a common bad habit in reading. Another bad habit that slows down the speed of reading is vocalization -- sounding each word either orally or mentally as one reads.21.What does the author say about reading?A Poor readers would never read to relax themselves.B People don't read newspapers, magazines, or journals anymore.C The ability to read and comprehend quickly is essential.D Everybody has poor reading habits at an early age.

Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy.Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable occupations.Personal consultants give them better advice for finding jobs.Even judges are softer on attractive defendants(被告).But in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability. While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder,it is harmful to a woman. Handsome male executives were thought as having more integrity than plainer men;effort and ability were thought to account for their success. Attractive female executives were considered to have less integrity than unattractive ones;their success was attributed not to ability but to factors such as luck. All unattractive women executives were thought to have more integrity and to be more capable than the attractive female executives.Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was attributed more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of attractive overnight successes. Why are attractive women not thought to be able?An attractive woman is thought to be more feminine and an attractive man more masculine(有男子气概的)than the less attractive ones. Thus,an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally masculine position appears to lack the“masculine”qualities required. This is true even in politics.“When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently,”says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women,in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again,in the order they would vote for them. The results showed that attractive males utterly defeated unattractive men,but the women who had been ranked most attractive invariably received the fewest votes. 1.The underlined word “liability”(in Para.1)most probably means “________”. A.misfortune B.instabilityC.disadvantage D.burden 2.In traditionally female jobs,attractiveness________. A.reinforces(加强)the feminine qualities required B.makes women look more honest and capable C.is of primary importance to women D.often enables women to succeed quickly 3.Bowman's experiment reveals that when it comes to politics,attractiveness________. A.turns out to be an obstacle to men B.affects men and women alike C.has as little effect on men as on women D.is more of an obstacle than a benefit to women 4.It can be inferred from the passage that people's views on beauty are often________. A.practical B.prejudicedC.old-fashioned D.pessimistic 5.The author writes this passage to________. A.demand equal rights for womenB.emphasize the importance of appearance C.discuss the negative aspects of being attractive D.give advice to job-seekers who are attractive

I have long believed that birth order is a factor in determining whether someone becomes an entrepreneur (企业家). First-born children tend to be more confident and perform best academically. They make strong leaders and do well as executives in organizations and in highly structured careers. They are used to taking responsibility, conforming to expectations, giving orders and getting special attention from their parents. But I believe they are less likely to be entrepreneurs, except if there is a family business to run.1. What is the passage mainly about?A. The role of birth order in becoming an entrepreneur.B. The relationship between birth order and academic success.C. The role first-born children play in a family.D. The role of birth order in running a family business.

The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty
