"Does my smile look big in this?" Future fitting-room mirrors in clothing stores could subtly adjust your reflection to make you look---and hence feel---happier, encouraging you to like what you see. That's the idea behind the Emotion Evoking System developed by Shigeo Yoshida and colleagues at the University of Tokyo in Japan. The system can manipulate, or in other word, control your emotions and personal preferences by presenting you with an image of your own smiling or frowning face. The principle that physiological changes can drive emotional ones---that laughter comes before happiness, rather than the other way around---is a well-established idea. The researchers wanted to see if this idea could be used to build a computer system that manipulates how you feel. The system works by presenting the user with a web-camera image of his or her face---as if they were looking in a mirror. The image is then subtly altered with software, turning the corners of the mouth up or down and changing the area around the eyes, so that the person appears to smile or frown. Without telling them the aim of the study, the team recruited 21 volunteers and asked them to sit in front of the screen while performing an unrelated task. When the task was complete the participants rated how they felt. When the faces on screen appeared to smile, people reported that they felt happier. On the other hand, when the image was given a sad expression, they reported feeling less happy. Yoshida and his colleagues tested whether manipulating the volunteers' emotional state would influence their preferences. Each person was given a scarf to wear and again presented with the altered webcam image. The volunteers that saw themselves smiling while wearing were less likely. The system could be used to manipulate consumers' impressions of products, say the researchers. For example, mirrors in clothing-store fitting rooms could be replaced with screens showing altered reflections. They also suggest people may be more likely to find clothes attractive if they see themselves looking happy while trying them on. "It's certainly an interesting area," says Chris Creed at the university of Birmingham, UK. But he notes that using such technology in a shop would be harder than in the lab, because people will use a wide range of expressions. "Attempting to make slight differences to these and ensuring that the reflected image looks believable would be much more challenging." He says. Of course, there are also important moral people questions surrounding such subtly manipulative technology. "You could argue that if it makes people happy what harm is it doing?" says Creed. "But I can image that many people may feel manipulated, uncomfortable and cheated if they found out."(1)What's the main purpose of the Emotion Evoking System? ____ A. To see whether one's feeling can be unconsciously affected.B. To see whether one's facial expressions can be altered.C. To manipulate one's feelings when he or she is shopping.D. To replace the mirrors in future clothing-store fitting rooms.(2)According to the passage, the web-camera image in the study ____ .A. gave the volunteers a false imageB. recorded the volunteers' performance in the taskC. attempted to make the volunteers feel happierD. beautified the volunteers' appearance in the mirror(3)What does Creed mention as a limitation of the technology? ____ A. It only changes the areas around the mouth and the eyes.B. It only works in clothing stores to attract shoppers.C. It only makes subtle changes to people's expressions.D. It only deals with a limited number of facial expressions.(4)Creed's comment on the moral issues with this technology implies ____ .A. nothing is more important than happinessB. technology is unable to manipulate peopleC. people should make their decisions independentlyD. people should neglect the harm of the technology
“Does my smile look big in this?” Future fitting-room mirrors in clothing stores could subtly adjust your reflection to make you look ─ and hence feel ─ happier, encouraging you to like what you see. That’s the idea behind the Emotion Evoking System developed by Shigeo Yoshida and colleagues at the University of Tokyo in Japan. The system can manipulate, or in other word, control your emotions and personal preferences by presenting you with an image of your own smiling or frowning face. The principle that physiological changes can drive emotional ones ─ that laughter comes before happiness, rather than the other way around ─ is a well-established idea. The researchers wanted to see if this idea could be used to build a computer system that manipulates how you feel. The system works by presenting the user with a web-camera image of his or her face ─ as if they were looking in a mirror. The image is then subtly altered with software, turning the corners of the mouth up or down and changing the area around the eyes, so that the person appears to smile or frown (皱眉). Without telling them the aim of the study, the team recruited (招募) 21 volunteers and asked them to sit in front of the screen while performing an unrelated task. When the task was complete the participants rated how they felt. When the faces on screen appeared to smile, people reported that they felt happier. On the other hand, when the image was given a sad expression, they reported feeling less happy. Yoshida and his colleagues tested whether manipulating the volunteers’ emotional state would influence their preferences. Each person was given a scarf to wear and again presented with the altered webcam image. The volunteers that saw themselves smiling while wearing the scarf were more likely to report that they liked it, and those that saw themselves not smiling were less likely. The system could be used to manipulate consumers’ impressions of products, say the researchers. For example, mirrors in clothing-store fitting rooms could be replaced with screens showing altered reflections. They also suggest people may be more likely to find clothes attractive if they see themselves looking happy while trying them on. “It’s certainly an interesting area,” says Chris Creed at the University of Birmingham, UK. In the study, the team placed hidden cameras in the nests of 17 different wild parrots. After studying their sounds, the team found the differences in the calls parents used to municate with each baby parrot. And the baby birds seemed to know the calls.Sounds very similar to humans, doesn’t it"The study also proved that these different calls are made socially not genetically (基因上地).To do this, scientistsswitched the eggs in nine of the 17 nests, so that half of the parrots were raising nestlings that weren’t theirs. Using the recordings, the scientists are sure that the nestlings all used names similar to those the parents (whether biological or non-biological) called them for the first weeks of their lives.Lucie Meil, from National Geographic, said, “this would be the first proven e*ample of a non-human species teaching acoustical (声学的) munication.〞Karl Berg told National Public Radio of the US, “Most people say all those calls are just noise, but I think they’re having conversations.〞Fo* News also asked Berg what else the parrots might be saying. He replied, “They may decide where the food is or if they should go 3 km North-Northwest. Something strange happened when I was 14 years old. Every previous year on Thanksgiving Day I'd woken up early, filled with excitement. But that Thanksgiving, for some reason I saw no reason to celebrate.None of my family were really thankful, I realized. The whole thing was a lie! During the dinner time, I left, hiding in the guest room and cried. My mom came to see what was wrong. "No one is really thankful!" I sobbed, "They just pretend for one day because that's what they're supposed to do!" After I finished talking, she nodded. "You're right," she told me. "It's fake until you find the truth for yourself." She said it was my choice whether to celebrate with them or not. She said Thanksgiving is a time to reflect because we don't always get to see loved ones and eat a good meal. Then she left. I didn't listen to her, thinking that every holiday was a lie and I could never find joy celebrating again. But giving in to my starving stomach, I went back to the dining room in a few minutes. "Andy," my aunt said, "We can't eat without you. We're waiting for your turn. Now you can start it." I didn't know what to say first. Finally, I said I was thankful for having a younger brother to teach, play with, and see grow. The family shared, and everyone had something beautiful to say. Listening to what they said, I suddenly understood what my mom meant about finding out my own reason for celebrating. question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty

The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers.
